1889-1964::The W. A. Jameson Coffee Company

1889-1964::The W.A. Jameson Coffee Company

The original W.A. Jameson story was long overdue for a rewrite. The dates were unclear, and the locations were wrong. It wasn't until I re-researched this little story that I discovered just how big Jameson's really was. I believe that Jameson's had the potential to do great things and perhaps become bigger than Starbucks is today...perhaps they were! I wouldn't be surprised to learn someday that the Starbucks guys took Jameson's lead and ran with it. Jameson's had died out just years before Starbucks came to life across the water in Seattle. In any case, it was particularly interesting to learn that they were serving up frothy lattes at the local fair in 1913. Thanks for following along!

REWRITE: 1953-1957::The Sourdough Lodge Boys' Camp in Sooke, British Columbia

1955::Sourdough Boys Selling Christmas Trees in Sooke, British Columbia

The Sourdough Boys Club was due for a solid rewrite. The new focus of the story is the club's value and the exact timeframe of its life. If you read the original story, the section about the old Sourdoughs was extracted and rewritten as its own story.

REWRITE: 1946::Post-War Smallpox Resurgence in the Pacific Northwest

REWRITE: 1946::Post-War Smallpox Resurgence in the Pacific Northwest

It was written at the beginning of COVID-19 when I was curious about what vaccination programs had previously been introduced to Vancouver Islanders. I have since learned that the only way to research an epidemic is to find the declaration of an outbreak. With this in mind, more research led me to the fact that the outbreak of this particular year was caused by a lone soldier returning from war. I cannot imagine the misfortune of this soldier who had survived a war and three years of absenteeism from home, only to die from a deadly disease at his doorstep—a tragic and significant missing part of the story that needed mentioning. The soldier's name was not given, nor did I look further into it, but I can imagine that he was buried at…

REWRITE: 1966::The Three Towers of Victoria, British Columbia

REWRITE: 1966::The Three Towers of Victoria, British Columbia

The original story of the Skydeck Tower of Victoria was in desperate need of an overhaul. After conducting further research, the story had evolved into something completely different from what I had written initially (not surprising, given that it was one of my first stories, and I've learned a great deal since then). The story was thrown in the crapper and rewritten to better reflect the surprising tale of Victoria's never-built towers. It's a long one, with a tragic ending, but if you like tower stories...
